Astros' Josh Hader: Picks up save Friday
Hader struck out one batter in a perfect inning and earned a save over the Brewers on Friday.
Hader made quick work of the Brewers Friday, needing just 12 pitches to snag his sixth save of the year. After a disastrous start to his Astros career -- 9.39 ERA with one save through nine appearances -- Hader has seemingly settled in with his new team. He's allowed just two earned runs over his last 12.1 innings, lowering his season ERA to 4.50. He's riding a 5.1-inning scoreless streak with three saves and a win during that span.

Astros' Hunter Brown: Wins with shaky outing
Brown (1-4) yielded four runs on four hits and three walks over five innings Friday, striking out five and earning a win over the Brewers.
Brown moved back into Houston's rotation for his first start since May 5 and notched his first win of 2024. He coughed up a solo homer to Jake Bauers in the second inning before Joey Ortiz slugged a three-run shot in the fourth. Brown has walked at least three batters in four of his eight starts and now owns a 41:21 K:BB through 37.1 innings. He'll carry a 7.71 ERA into his next appearance, which is currently lined up to be at home against the Angels. Brown could be pushed back to a bullpen role once Jose Urquidy (forearm) is healthy and Ronel Blanco returns from his suspension.

Astros' Ryan Pressly: Battling finger soreness
Manager Joe Espada said Pressly was unavailable for Friday's game against the Brewers due to a sore finger on his right (throwing) hand, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
Pressly's finger issue doesn't appear to be anything too serious, though it may prevent him from pitching for another day or two. The 35-year-old right-hander currently holds a 5.51 ERA and 1.78 WHIP through 16.1 innings and has not appeared in a game since Tuesday.

Astros' Jose Urquidy: Requires additional rehab start
Urquidy (forearm) will make another rehab start after his upcoming outing at Double-A Corpus Christi on Saturday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
Manager Joe Espada said Urquidy is slated for four innings (60-65 pitches) in Saturday's contest, so the Astros will keep him in the minors for an additional rehab appearance in hopes of stretching him out further. The 29-year-old righty struggled in his first rehab outing, giving up three earned runs across 2.2 innings with Triple-A Sugar Land. Assuming his third start in the minors will be his last, Urquidy is in line to pitch again for the Astros in Seattle on May 29.

Astros' Parker Mushinski: Recalled by Houston
The Astros recalled Mushinski from Triple-A Sugar Land on Friday.
Since being optioned to Triple-A on April 12, Mushinski has appeared in 12 games for Sugar Land, registering a 4.15 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 14:5 K:BB over 13 frames. The southpaw has not yielded a run over his last six minor-league outings, and he'll provide left-handed depth out of the bullpen for Houston. The Astros optioned right-hander Shawn Dubin to Triple-A Sugar Land in a corresponding move.

Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Receiving rest day
Alvarez is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Brewers, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Alvarez has a .646 OPS through 15 games in May and went 1-for-11 with five strikeouts over the past three contests, and he'll sit Friday after starting the first 44 games of the campaign. Yainer Diaz will serve as the designated hitter while Victor Caratini starts behind the plate.

Astros' Shawn Dubin: Sent to minors
Dubin was optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land on Friday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
Less than 24 hours after making his first career big-league save, Dubin was sent down to Triple-A in a corresponding move to Parker Mushinski's call-up. In 13.2 innings with the Astros, Dubin logged a 6.59 ERA with a 13:7 K:BB.

Astros' Parker Mushinski: Headed back to majors
The Astros will recall Mushinski from Triple-A Sugar Land prior to Friday's game versus the Brewers, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
There's no word yet on what the corresponding move will be, but Shawn Dubin threw three innings Thursday so he is a candidate to be options. Mushinski has been knocked around for seven runs (five earned) over four relief innings during his time in the majors this season.

Astros' Yainer Diaz: Starting to find some power
Diaz went 1-for-4 with a double, three RBI and a run scored Thursday against the Athletics.
Diaz has hit well for average this season, but he has struggled to find much power as he has just a .119 ISO. He's started to show more pop of late, tallying three of his eight doubles on the campaign in his last nine games. Despite the lack of extra-base knocks, Diaz has managed 16 runs scored and 21 RBI across 42 games and comfortably remains Houston's top option behind the dish.

Astros' Joey Loperfido: Crushes first homer
Loperfido went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Thursday's win over the Athletics while also drawing a walk.
Loperfido jumped on a changeup from Joey Estes with two outs in the bottom of the third inning and sent it over the wall in right field for his first big-league home run, capping off a six-run inning for Houston. The rookie outfielder has gotten off to a fantastic start and has now hit safely in five straight games. Over that stretch he's batting .388 (7-for-18) with three RBI and three runs scored.

Astros' Shawn Dubin: Earns first save
Dubin picked up his first save in a win over Oakland on Thursday, allowing one run on two hits over three innings while striking out two.
The right-handed reliever surrendered a leadoff single to kick things off in the seventh and advanced the runner on a wild pitch before they would eventually make their way home. However, Dubin cruised through the next two frames and recorded his longest appearance of the campaign in an 8-1 win. On the downside, he's now allowed at least one run in two of his last three appearances as he continues to work in a low-leverage role.

Astros' Cristian Javier: Dominant in win
Javier (3-1) earned the win over the Athletics on Wednesday, pitching six shutout innings while allowing two hits and one walk. He struck out eight.
Javier came out firing Thursday, striking out five of the first eight batters he faced before finishing with a season-high eight punchouts on the night. The right-hander threw first-pitch strikes to only nine of the 21 batters he faced, but he also produced 15 whiffs as he cruised to his third win of the season. It was a nice return to form for Javier, who was shelled for seven runs in his first start after returning from the injured list a week ago. The quality start was his third of the campaign, while it also marked the second time this season he's allowed two or fewer hits in an outing.

Astros' Chas McCormick: Won't return Friday
McCormick (hamstring) will make his second rehab appearance with Double-A Corpus Christi on Friday, MLB.com reports.
McCormick is nearing a return, as he played five innings in center field with Corpus Christi on Tuesday. However, he won't be back in the minor-league lineup again until Friday, meaning he won't be activated from the injured list until at least Saturday. McCormick has gone 2-for-7 in his first two appearances of the rehab stint.

Astros' Seth Martinez: Earns first save
Martinez picked up the save in a win over the Athletics on Wednesday, allowing two walks over two innings while striking out one.
Martinez entered the contest with a three-run lead in the top of the eighth and struck out the first batter on seven pitches before issuing a walk to JJ Bleday. The right-hander would quickly work his way through it, however, thanks to a double play ball in the following at-bat, before returning for the ninth. Despite also issuing a walk in the final frame, Martinez was able to wrap up the game with another scoreless inning to notch his first save of the season. It was a nice bounceback effort for the reliever, who had allowed three runs in his previous appearance on May 12 against the Tigers. Closer Josh Hader covered two innings Tuesday while Ryan Pressly, Bryan Abreu and Rafael Montero pitched two straight days, which opened up the save chance for Martinez.

Astros' Framber Valdez: Dominant over seven frames
Valdez (3-1) picked up the win over Oakland on Wednesday, hurling seven shutout innings while allowing just two hits and two walks. He struck out eight.
Valdez breezed through Oakland's lineup throughout the contest, retiring 11 of the first 12 batters he faced while never allowing a runner to reach second, aside from when Shea Langeliers advanced due to a balk in the seventh. It marked the lefty's second start this season in which he didn't allow any runs, while the two hits allowed marked a season low. Valdez has now won three of his last four decisions (spanning four starts), posting a 21:5 K:BB over that stretch.
