Alvarez (thumb) resumed his rehab assignment Sunday with High-A Brooklyn, starting at catcher while going 0-for-5 in a 7-6 loss to Aberdeen. After going 3-for-14 with a home run and three walks across the first five games of his rehab assignment, Alvarez had been out of the Brooklyn lineup for each of the previous three days while tending to a family matter in his native Venezuela. He rejoined Brooklyn for its final game of the week, and though he came up empty at the plate, getting additional at-bats under his belt is the more pressing concern for Alvarez as he looks to prove he's made a full recovery from the left thumb surgery he underwent in late April. If the Mets are comfortable with Alvarez's health coming out of Sunday's contest, he could be activated from the 10-day injured list for the start of the big club's series with the Marlins that begins Tuesday.... Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Return could be delayed
Alvarez (thumb) has flown back to his native Venezuela to tend to a family matter, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. Alvarez had been set for activation June 11 upon the Mets' return home from London, but he might now be back a day or two later. The young catcher has been sidelined since April 20 with a fractured left thumb and has played five rehab games, going 3-for-14 with one home run.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Set to catch on consecutive days
Alvarez (thumb) will be behind the plate for Triple-A Syracuse on both Friday and Saturday before serving as the designated hitter Sunday, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. The young catcher is on track to return from a fractured left thumb early next week when the Mets return from London, but the organization will put him through his paces this weekend to make sure he's ready. Alvarez caught a combined no-hitter with High-A Brooklyn on Tuesday, and he's drawn praise from coaches for the work he's put in during his rehab assignment. While his thumb will remain in a splint for a while yet, he should immediately slot back in as New York's starting catcher when he returns, although his backup -- whether that's Tomas Nido or Luis Torrens -- could still see a bigger workload in the short term as Alvarez gets eased back into action.... Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Eyeing return next week
Manager Carlos Mendoza said Monday that Alvarez (thumb) won't join the Mets for their two-game series in London with the Phillies this weekend, but the catcher could be ready to return from the 10-day injured list June 11 for the start of the club's homestand, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. On the shelf since April 20 with a fractured left thumb that eventually required surgery, Alvarez is closing in on a return after he initiated a rehab assignment with Double-A Binghamton this past weekend. He made three starts at catcher with Binghamton and went 2-for-8 with a home run and two walks, but the Mets want him to pick up more reps in the minors before he comes off the IL. Alvarez is likely to either stick around at Binghamton or shift his assignment to Triple-A Syracuse in the coming days, and if he escapes without any setbacks, he should settle back in as the Mets' primary backstop beginning next week.... Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Cleared for rehab assignment
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Tuesday that Alvarez (thumb) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Binghamton on Thursday, Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com reports. Mendoza offered that Alvarez will catch 5-to-7 innings in his first game with Binghamton and build up from there. Alvarez is five weeks removed from undergoing surgery to repair a torn UCL in his left thumb. He was given an eight-week timetable to return following the operation, but the young catcher would appear to have a good shot to beat that timeline.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Looking good in batting practice
Alvarez (thumb) was reaching exit velocities over 100 miles per hour during batting practice over the weekend, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. The 22-year-old catcher is still wearing a splint on his surgically repaired thumb, however, and the Mets aren't going to rush him back from the 10-day injured list. The team may also use his recovery period to have him work on his positioning behind the plate, as Alvarez has a tendency to be overeager reaching for pitches and is susceptible to getting his glove hand smacked by a swing. Alvarez was batting .236 (13-for-55) with one home run and eight RBI through 16 games when he was injured in mid-April.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Set for batting practice Saturday
Alvarez (thumb) is set to participate in batting practice Saturday, Abbey Mastracco of the New York Daily News reports. Alvarez landed on the 10-day IL after tearing the UCL in his left thumb April 19, and the 22-year-old catcher is on track for a return by late June. Alvarez was slashing .236/.288/.364 with one home run and eight RBI over 59 plate appearances prior to his injury.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Hoping to take BP soon
The Mets are aiming for Alvarez (thumb) to begin taking batting practice during their upcoming homestand, which begins Friday and runs through June 2, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. It's been a month since Alvarez had surgery to address a torn UCL in his left thumb, and he's almost ready to pick up a bat as he advances his rehab. The catcher remains on track to return from the 10-day injured list in mid-to-late June.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Gets stitches removed
Alvarez had the stitches removed Monday from his surgically repaired left thumb, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Alvarez underwent surgery April 23 to address a torn UCL in the thumb on his glove hand. At the time his surgery was performed, the Mets estimated that Alvarez would need eight weeks to make a full recovery, so he appears unlikely to return from the injured list until around late June. A more precise target date for his return should come into focus once he resumes taking batting practice and performing defensive drills.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Undergoes thumb operation
Alvarez underwent surgery on his left thumb Tuesday, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. Alvarez was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a torn UCL in his left thumb and he will now officially begin the road to recovery. The Mets said Tuesday that the catcher is expected to miss eight weeks of action while recovering from the surgery, which likely means that Alvarez will be on the shelf until late June. In the meantime, Omar Narvaez and Tomas Nido will continue to split the work behind the plate for New York.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Set to have surgery
Alvarez will get surgery Tuesday for the torn UCL in his left thumb and expects to miss 6-to-8 weeks, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Alvarez sustained the thumb injury during Friday's game against the Dodgers after stumbling on his turn toward second base. He started the season slashing .236/.288/.364 with one home run and eight RBI over 59 plate appearances. Omar Narvaez and Tomas Nido will handle the catching duties while Alvarez is sidelined.... Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Getting more tests on left thumb
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza revealed Saturday that Alvarez is undergoing additional testing on his left thumb, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Alvarez was diagnosed with a left thumb sprain after undergoing an MRI following Friday's game against the Dodgers. The initial scan didn't reveal any ligament tear or break, but there is concern that there is more to the sprain, and Mendoza noted that Alvarez is expected to miss more than 10 days with the injury. While Alvarez continues to be evaluated, Omar Narvaez will serve as the Mets' top catcher while Tomas Nido fills in as the backup.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Lands on IL
The Mets placed Alvarez (thumb) on the 10-day injured list Saturday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Alvarez was removed from Friday's game against the Dodgers after he stumbled on his turn to second base and appeared to jam his left thumb. He received an MRI following Friday's contest, and while Mets manager Carlos Mendoza admitted to Tim Healey of Newsday that he was "pretty concerned," Alvarez seems to have escaped with a sprained left thumb, rather than a break or ligament tear. With Alvarez on the shelf, the Mets selected Tomas Nido from Triple-A Syracuse to serve as the backup to Omar Narvaez. To make room for Nido on the 40-man roster, New York designated Kolton Ingram for assignment Saturday.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Undergoing MRI on thumb
Alvarez is getting an MRI on his left thumb after leaving Friday's game against the Dodgers, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. "I'm pretty concerned. I'm not going to lie," manager Carlos Mendoza said. Alvarez injured his thumb in the second inning as he planted his left hand into the ground, after stumbling on his turn at second base. Anthony DiComo of MLB.com notes that Alvarez's left thumb "has taken a beating lately," and it sounds like Mendoza is resigned to being without his starting backstop for a stretch given how much pain Alvarez was in. Omar Narvaez is the only other catcher currently on the Mets' 40-man roster, although Tomas Nido is batting .345 (10-for-29) with Triple-A Syracuse.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Exits with injured thumb
Alvarez was removed from Friday's game against the Dodgers due to a left thumb injury, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Alvarez stumbled while rounding first base during the top of the second inning and appeared to jam his left thumb while trying to regain his footing. He remained in the game to run the bases and eventually came around to score, but he was replaced behind the dish by Omar Narvaez once the Mets' defense took the field. The 22-year-old backstop will presumably undergo imaging, and the team should offer an update on his status in the near future.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Picks up first steal of 2024
Alvarez went 1-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base in Wednesday's win over the Pirates. The 22-year-old doesn't run much, but he's never been caught stealing in the majors, going 3-for-3 in 143 MLB games. Alvarez is struggling to get going at the plate this year, slashing .241/.293/.370 through 15 games with a homer, a steal, seven runs and eight RBI, but he remains locked in as the Mets' near-everyday catcher.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Sitting Saturday
Alvarez isn't in the Mets' lineup for Saturday's contest against Kansas City. Alvarez will get a breather after going 1-for-4 and scoring a run during Friday's win in the series opener. Omar Narvaez will fill in behind the dish and bat eighth.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Out of Tuesday's lineup
Alvarez is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against Atlanta, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Alvarez is 1-for-13 with five strikeouts and a walk over his past four games, and he'll take a seat for Tuesday's contest. Omar Narvaez will step in behind the plate to catch for right-hander Adrian Houser.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Hot start to season
Alvarez went 1-for-4 with a double in Monday's loss to the Tigers. The 22-year-old has started all four games to begin the season, three behind the plate and one at DH, and he's banged out an extra-base hit in three straight, going 6-for-11 with two doubles, a homer, two RBI and three runs. Alvarez has been one of the few bright spots in the early going for the 0-4 Mets, and after slugging 25 home runs as a rookie over 123 games in 2023, he's looking to add more consistent production to his profile and boost his .209/.284/.437 slash line.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Recovered from heel injury
Alvarez (heel) felt better Monday and the Mets are unconcerned about the catcher's health going into the offseason, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. Alvarez had to exit Sunday's regular-season finale after taking a ball off his heel, but it appears that it will be a non-issue heading into the winter. Although he faded after the All-Star break, Alvarez still finished with 25 home runs in his rookie season, which ranked second only to Cal Raleigh among catchers.... See More ... See Less
