  • Athletics' Brett Harris: Taking seat Tuesday

Harris is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game at Houston, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Harris started all 11 games at third base since being promoted by Oakland on May 3, and he'll receive a day off after he posted a .147/.333/.412 slash line. Abraham Toro will man the hot corner while Zack Gelof (oblique) returns from the injured list to start at second base.

  • Athletics' Seth Brown: Not in Tuesday's lineup

Brown is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Astros, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Brown has gone 3-for-22 through nine games in May and will take a seat for Tuesday's contest. Brent Rookier is starting in left field while Kyle McCann serves as the designated hitter.

  • Athletics' Miguel Andujar: Beginning assignment Thursday

Andujar (knee) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Las Vegas on Thursday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Andujar has been going through workouts with the Aviators over the past few days, and he is now scheduled to get back into game action soon. The A's haven't indicated how long they intend on keeping the 29-year-old in the minors, but he will likely need to see a good amount of at-bats after spending the past two months recovering from knee surgery.

  • Athletics' Brady Basso: Could make MLB start

Basso was recalled from Double-A Midland on Tuesday.

Basso is set to make his first MLB appearance of his career, being called up after logging a 2.84 ERA in 25.1 innings at Double-A. He made one start at Triple-A this year but surrendered nine runs on 10 hits in 2.1 innings. Basso replaces Easton Lucas on the major-league roster and has a shot at making a spot start due to Alex Wood (shoulder) and Osvaldo Bido (finger) dealing with minor injuries.

  • Athletics' Zack Gelof: Returns from injured list

Gelof (oblique) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list and is starting at second base Tuesday against the Astros.

The 24-year-old has been sidelined nearly three weeks by an oblique strain and is back with Oakland after a two-game rehab assignment with Triple-A Las Vegas. Gelof had a slow start to the campaign with a .597 OPS through 24 games but should operate as the Athletics' primary second baseman now that he's healthy.

  • Athletics' Easton Lucas: Sent back down

Lucas was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday.

Lucas has bounced between the majors and Triple-A during May. He's allowed at least one run in each of his three MLB appearances, including a four-run (three earned) outing Monday across 1.1 innings.

  • Athletics' Lawrence Butler: Sent down to Triple-A

Butler was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old was moved to Triple-A to make room for Zack Gelof (oblique), who was reinstated from the 10-day IL in a corresponding move. Butler saw regular action in the outfield early in the season but has struggled offensively with a .537 OPS in 41 contests.

  • Athletics' Seth Brown: Records second steal Monday

Brown went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in a loss to the Astros on Monday.

Brown rapped out a single for the third time in the last four games, while the steal was his second of the season. The 31-year-old's power drought is increasingly concerning, however, considering he has just six extra-base hits in 113 plate appearances after averaging one every 10.2 trips to the batter's box over the previous three seasons.

  • Athletics' JJ Bleday: More timely hitting Monday

Bleday went 2-for-4 with an RBI double in a loss to the Astros on Monday. He was also caught stealing on his one attempt.

Bleday plated the Athletics' second and final run of the night with his fifth-inning two-bagger, driving in Abraham Toro. The lefty-swinging slugger has been mostly clicking at the plate in May, producing a .286/.400/.524 slash line with a 15.7 percent walk rate, six extra-base hits and nine RBI over 51 plate appearances.

  • Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Hot hitting continues Monday

Soderstrom went 2-for-4 with an RBI single and a double in a loss to the Astros on Monday.

Soderstrom delivered half the offense for the Athletics on the night with his fourth-inning knock, which plated Brent Rooker. The 22-year-old extended the red-hot start to his first big-league stint of 2024 with his multi-hit effort, as he's now reached safely in all four games he's appeared in and has doubled in back-to-back contests.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Getting another start

Estes is slated to start Thursday's game against the Astros in Houston, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

He'll be awarded his second straight turn through the rotation after striking out five and allowing just one run over five innings last weekend in Seattle following his call-up from Triple-A Las Vegas. Estes could be in line for an extended run in the big-league rotation with Paul Blackburn (foot) recently going on the injured list and with Alex Wood (shoulder) also at risk of being deactivated.

  • Athletics' Ross Stripling: Takes seventh loss

Stripling (1-7) took the loss against Houston on Monday, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out one batter over five innings.

Stripling was efficient in the outing, needing just 52 pitches to get through five frames. However, he was pulled before the sixth inning despite the low pitch count and despite retiring the final five batters he faced, and a fourth-inning solo homer he served up to Alex Bregman ended up being the deciding factor in sending him to his MLB-high seventh loss. Stripling at least managed to improve from a horrific outing his previous trip to the mound, when he gave up 11 runs (five earned) over 1.2 innings against Texas.

  • Athletics' Aaron Brooks: Ticketed for start Wednesday

The Athletics will call up Brooks from Triple-A Las Vegas to start Wednesday's game against the Astros in Houston, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

With six starters on the injured list and with another two in Alex Wood (shoulder) and Osvaldo Bido (finger) considered day-to-day, the Athletics will bring Brooks up from Triple-A to help patch one of the many holes in the rotation. Currently in the midst of his third stint in the Oakland organization after signing a minor-league deal in February, Brooks will be making his first appearance in the majors since 2022 and his first start in the big leagues since 2019. The 34-year-old right-hander has turned in underwhelming ratios at Triple-A this season (4.57 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 32:10 K:BB in 43.1 innings), though his numbers look more favorable when considering the hitter-friendly context of the Pacific Coast League.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Losing work to Soderstrom

Davis remains out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Astros.

Davis has now started just once in the Athletics' last five games, as he's seemingly moved into the short side of a platoon with the lefty-hitting Tyler Soderstrom, who has recently taken over as the team's primary first baseman. The 31-year-old has supplied a career-worst .586 OPS over 83 plate appearances this season, and the non-contending Athletics don't have much incentive to give him regular playing time while he's struggling to produce.

  • Athletics' Tyler Nevin: Sitting against righty again

Nevin is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Astros.

Nevin is on the bench for the fourth time in seven games, with each of those absences coming against right-handed pitching. With both Brett Harris and Tyler Soderstrom having settled into everyday roles at the corner-infield spots, the right-handed-hitting Nevin looks like he'll be limited to short-side platoon duties for the time being.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Settling in as everyday shortstop

Schuemann will start at shortstop and bat seventh in Monday's game against the Astros.

Schuemann will pick up his sixth consecutive start after going 5-for-19 with a home run, two doubles, two walks, four RBI and three runs over Oakland's previous five games. He looks poised to operate as the Athletics' primary shortstop while Darell Hernaiz is on the injured list with a severe ankle sprain.

  • Athletics' Luis Medina: Set for 45-pitch sim game

Medina (knee) is scheduled to throw around 45 pitches Wednesday in a simulated game at extended spring training, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

The upcoming sim game will likely represent the final hurdle for Medina to clear in his recovery from a Grade 2 MCL sprain before he heads out on what will likely be a multi-start minor-league rehab assignment. With injuries mounting in the Oakland rotation, Medina should have a starting role with the big club waiting for him once he gets fully stretched out in the minors.

  • Athletics' Alex Wood: Getting shoulder evaluated

Wood has been sent back to Oakland to have his left shoulder evaluated, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Wood was dealing with shoulder soreness during his start in Sunday's 8-4 loss to the Mariners, and the injury seems to be one that's been a problem for him for a while. A stint on the injured list would appear to be a distinct possibility for Wood, but the team is unlikely to make a decision on his status until his evaluation is completed. If Wood isn't able to take the hill for his next turn through the rotation this weekend in Kansas City, the Athletics would likely turn to Kyle Muller or Mitch Spence to start in his place.
