Castillo (5-7) took the loss to the Royals on Saturday, allowing five runs on six hits and one walk while striking out four over five innings. Castillo had a tough outing as he gave up a season-high five runs in his seventh loss of the season. His offense gave him the lead two separate times Saturday, but he gave it back each time as he snapped a streak of 10 straight starts allowing two earned runs or fewer. Castillo remains one of the more consistent and durable starters in baseball, he's gone at least five innings in all of his 14 starts and will take a 3.35 ERA into his next outing.... See More ... Mariners' Luis Castillo: Twirls seven scoreless innings
Castillo (5-6) allowed two hits and three walks while striking out six over seven scoreless innings to earn the win over the Angels on Sunday. Castillo's gone seven innings in three of his 13 starts this season, and he's kept runs off the board in the each of those outings. He allowed four runs in each of his first three starts of the season, but he hasn't given up more than three runs in any of his last 10 appearances, nine of which went down as quality starts. Castillo is at a strong 2.99 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 81:22 K:BB over 78.1 innings this season. He's projected to make his next start on the road in Kansas City.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Luis Castillo: Stays consistent versus Astros
Castillo did not factor into the decision in Tuesday's 4-2 win over the Astros, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out six in six innings. Castillo remains winless over his last three starts but has consistently been putting up solid results. He's now two earned runs or fewer in nine straight starts dating back to April 14 and eight of those starts have gone at least six innings. His lone mistake on the evening was serving up a two-run homer to Alex Bregman in the fourth to give the Astros a 2-1 lead. He's now given up five home runs over his last four starts. Castillo owns a 3.28 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 75:19 K:BB in 71.1 innings and will face the Angels at home his next time on the mound.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Luis Castillo: Falls to Yankees
Castillo (4-6) took the loss Thursday against the Yankees, allowing two runs on seven hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out three. Castillo dealt with traffic for most of his outing, but he ultimately held New York to a pair of solo home runs. The loss snapped a stretch of seven straight quality starts for Castillo -- he'd posted a 2.01 ERA in that span. Overall, his ERA sits at 3.31 this season with a 1.21 WHIP and 69:18 K:BB over 65.1 innings. Castillo's currently lined up for a home matchup with the Astros in his next start.... See More ... Mariners' Luis Castillo: Mixed bag in no-decision
Castillo did not factor into the decision Saturday in Baltimore, permitting two runs on four hits and four walks over six innings. He struck out two. The four walks were a season high and the two strikeouts were by far a season low for Castillo. He still managed a seventh straight quality start, keeping his team in it before the Mariners' offense rallied late. It marks the first no-decision of the season for Castillo, who is just 4-5 despite a 3.28 ERA, including a 2.01 mark across his last seven outings.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Luis Castillo: Down's A's for fourth win
Castillo (4-5) picked up the win over the Athletics on Sunday, allowing two runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out eight over six innings. Both runs allowed by Castillo came via the long ball, with Max Schuemann and Abraham Toro taking him deep in consecutive innings. Aside from that, Castillo limited the damage to just base hits and tossed his sixth straight quality start, which now puts him in a tie for fifth-most in baseball. Castillo now owns a 3.31 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 64:11 K:BB in 54.1 innings and lines up to face the Orioles on the road next weekend.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Luis Castillo: Coughs up three runs
Castillo (3-5) yielded three runs on three hits over 6.2 innings Monday, striking out seven and taking a loss against the Twins. Castillo fired four shutout frames before the Twins broke the scoreless tie in the fifth inning. He later was charged with two more runs in the seventh. Entering Monday's start, Castillo had turned in four straight outings with two or fewer earned runs allowed. He's factored into the decision in each of his eight starts and snapped his three-game winning streak Monday. Despite the up-and-down start to his season, Castillo has registered a solid 3.54 ERA with a 56:11 K:BB through 48.1 innings. His next start is currently projected to be at home against Oakland this weekend.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Luis Castillo: Dominates Atlanta
Castillo (3-4) earned the win over Atlanta on Tuesday, tossing seven shutout innings while allowing just three hits and a walk. He struck out seven. Castillo was dominant once again en route to his third consecutive win. He registered 20 whiffs with 10 of those coming from his fastball and did not give up an extra-base knock. It's safe to say that Castillo is rounding back into ace form. Over his last four starts, he's posted a 1.38 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 31:4 K:BB in 26 innings while allowing a .174 opponent batting average over that span. The 31-year-old will look to keep it rolling in a projected road start against the red-hot Twins next week.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Luis Castillo: Another strong start
Castill0 (2-4) picked up the win Thursday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over six innings against the Rangers. He struck out six. Castillo had issues keeping the ball inside the park Thursday, allowing solo home runs to Nathaniel Lowe and Josh Smith in the first and fourth innings, respectively. He's now allowed a long ball in four of his six outings this season but has churned out three straight quality starts. During that stretch, Castillo owns a 1.89 ERA and a 24:3 K:BB across 19 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Luis Castillo: Hurls seven shutout innings
Castillo (1-4) earned the win Saturday, shutting out the Rockies over seven innings while allowing two hits and one walk. He struck out nine. Castillo ran through the Rockies' lineup Saturday, retiring 11 of the first 12 batters he faced while never allowing a runner to reach second base over his seven innings of work. It marked the right-hander's second quality start in a row after giving up four earned runs in each of his first three outings to open the season. Castillo is certainly trending in the right direction following the rocky start and now sports an outstanding 31:3 K:BB in April (four starts).... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Luis Castillo: Roughed up by Blue Jays
Castillo (0-3) took the loss Monday, allowing four runs on nine hits and one walk across five innings against Toronto. He struck out six. Castillo turned in another poor start, yielding four earned runs for a third straight appearance. The 31-year-old has endured a minor dip in velocity once again to begin 2024, dropping from 96.2 mph to 95.4 mph after sitting around 97 mph for most of his career. If there's any silver lining to his slow opening to the season, it would be that Castillo hasn't seen a dropoff in strikeout rate (10.3 K/9). He'll look to turn things around Sunday in a homestand against the Cubs.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Luis Castillo: Takes another loss
Castillo (0-2) took the loss Tuesday against Cleveland, allowing four runs on 10 hits and a walk over 5.2 innings. He struck out seven. Castillo's strikeout total was the only positive from Tuesday's loss as he surrendered double-digit hits for just the third time in his career. He was tagged by Bo Naylor for a two-run homer in the fourth frame. Castillo will look to find the elusive first win of 2024 next time out, tentatively lined up for Monday against the Blue Jays.... Mariners' Luis Castillo: Begins season with loss
Castillo (0-1) took the loss against Boston on Thursday, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five batters over five innings. Castillo struck out two batters in a 1-2-3 first inning, but he didn't record any clean frames thereafter. The right-hander was stung by Rafael Devers' two-run homer in the third and followed by giving up a run in each of the next two frames. On a positive note, Castillo worked up to 91 pitches in his season debut and averaged 95.8 mph on his fastball, so he seems to be in good form despite the rough outing. He'll look to bounce back next week, as he is projected to make his next start at home against Cleveland.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Luis Castillo: Called upon for Opening Day start
Manager Scott Servais said Monday that Castillo will start the Mariners' March 28 season opener versus the Red Sox at T-Mobile Park, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. The Mariners have better choices than most teams to take the ball Opening Day, but Castillo always loomed as the obvious option. The 31-year-old right-hander posted a 3.34 ERA and 219:56 K:BB over 197 innings covering 33 starts for Seattle in 2023.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Luis Castillo: Encouraged by early velocity
Castillo, who fired a couple of 96-mph fastballs during his Cactus League debut Monday against the Reds, is encouraged he has that level of velocity early in camp, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. "It's telling me that I'm healthy," Castillo said. "We're going to continue to be in the same routine, and hopefully that velocity will keep going up." Castillo notably opened spring training a year ago throwing his four-seamer in the high 80s, so the increase is certainly noteworthy. The veteran right-hander, who fell just one win short of tying his career high of 15 victories last season, will once again helm the Mariners' rotation and limited Cincinnati to a walk over two hitless innings in his spring debut. Castillo plans to continue relying heavily on his fastball in 2024, considering hitters mustered just a .165 average and .384 slugging percentage against it while swinging and missing 33 percent of the time in 2023.... Mariners' Luis Castillo: Cruises to win
Castillo (14-7) allowed two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out eight over seven innings to earn the win Tuesday over the Athletics. Castillo earned his fifth quality start in his last six outings with a solid performance Tuesday. It took the Athletics until the seventh inning to get on the board, and the Mariners' lead was never in any real danger. Castillo now has a 3.06 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 207:50 K:BB through 188.1 innings across 31 starts this season. He's lined up for a critical home start versus the Astros early next week as the Mariners continue to battle for the AL West lead.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Luis Castillo: Strikes out eight in win
Castillo (13-7) earned the win Wednesday, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks over six innings in a 3-2 victory over the Angels. He struck out eight. Castillo's now picked up wins in seven of his last nine starts, with his most recent loss coming on July 14. He's up to 199 strikeouts on the campaign, leaving him poised to top the 200 mark for the second time in his seven-year career. Castillo sports a 3.08 ERA with a 1.04 WHIP through 30 starts (181.1 innings) this season. He'll look to keep rolling in his next outing, currently scheduled for early next week in Oakland.... Mariners' Luis Castillo: Six scoreless in win
Castillo (12-7) earned the win Thursday, allowing four hits and four walks over six scoreless innings against the Rays. He struck out eight. Castillo wasn't particularly efficient Thursday, issuing four walks and allowing at least one baserunner in all but one of his six innings. However, the 30-year-old ace worked around the traffic and held Tampa Bay scoreless to win his sixth consecutive decision. During that eight-start span, Castillo has posted a 3.24 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 49:12 K:BB across 50 innings. His next start is expected to be at home versus the Angels early next week.... See More ... Mariners' Luis Castillo: Five earned runs in no-decision
Castillo did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks over five innings in an 8-7 win over the Mets. He struck out two. The 30-year-old ace held the Mets scoreless until a single and a hit-by-pitch preceded DJ Stewart's three-run homer in the fourth inning. Despite Castillo's substandard performance, the right-hander was in line for the victory before New York tied the game in the eighth. The no-decision snapped a string of four consecutive starts in which Castillo earned a win, posting a 2.00 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and an impressive 26:4 K:BB across 27 innings during that streak. He'll look to get back on track in his next outing, which is tentatively scheduled to take place in Tampa Bay next week.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Luis Castillo: Cruises to victory
Castillo (10-7) yielded one run on five hits over seven innings Monday, striking out nine and earning a win over the White Sox. After giving up a run in the first frame, Castillo fired six shutout innings in the dominant win. It was his first outing without issuing a walk since July 14. The veteran righty owns a terrific 58:9 K:BB in 50 innings since the All-Star break but also has a 3.78 ERA during that stretch. Castillo's season ERA dropped to 3.15 after Monday's win. His next outing is lined up to be at home against the Royals.... See More ... See Less
